His specific birth and death dates are not known. Shang was born in Puyang in the Henan province. His style name was 'Weiji' (惟吉). He was an imperial court painter who was awarded the title 'Commander of the Imperial Guards'.
Positions recorded include court painter. Work by Shang Xi is recorded in the collections of The Palace Museum and National Palace Museum.

'Guan Yu Capturing His Enemy Pang De' (关羽擒将). Ink and color on silk. 200 x 237 cm. Located in the Palace Museum, Beijing. The image is of the siege city of Fancheng (樊城, present day Xiangfan, Hubei), where Guan Yu captures Pang De (庞德) in the year 219.
