Encyclopedia text

Where a biographical narrative in the Encyclopedia is based on a Wikipedia article, the page says so in its own Text attribution section. That section names the article, the language edition, the exact revision used and the licence under which the text is available — the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 International licence (CC BY-SA 4.0) — and states that VALÉORINE has edited the text. VALÉORINE's reuse of that text is offered under the same licence.

The revision identifier recorded for each page allows the original wording to be compared with the wording published here. The text is attributed to the article's contributors, as the licence requires.

Text that is not marked in this way — the chronology, the holdings, the evidence, the connections between records, the editorial notes and the descriptions of objects and sales — is VALÉORINE's own record.

Citations carried over from a source article

Where the notes and bibliography of a source article are shown, they appear under their own heading and in the source's own numbering. They are never merged with the references VALÉORINE has examined itself, which are listed separately.

Structured data and identifiers

Names, dates, places and the identifiers that connect a record to the catalogues of libraries and museums are drawn from open registers — in particular Wikidata, whose structured data is released under the CC0 1.0 public domain dedication, and the authority files published by national libraries and cultural institutions. Each identifier shown on a page links to the register it comes from.

Pictures

A picture is reproduced only where the holding register publishes it as being in the public domain or under an open licence. Each plate names the creator, the holding institution, the credit and the licence exactly as that register states them, and links to the register's own page for the work. A picture whose terms cannot be established from the register is not shown.

The registers currently drawn upon include Wikimedia Commons, the Wellcome Collection, The Cleveland Museum of Art and The Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Typefaces

The typefaces used on this site and embedded in its sale posters, Cormorant Garamond and Jost, are licensed under the SIL Open Font License, Version 1.1, and are served from VALÉORINE's own domain.

Software

VALÉORINE's own software is proprietary. It is built with open-source libraries, each used under the licence its authors declare. A register of those libraries, their versions and their declared licences is published on this site as a plain-text file and is regenerated from the installed software whenever it changes.

The VALÉORINE name, visual identity, original photographs, sale catalogues, condition notes and original editorial material remain the property of VALÉORINE and may not be reproduced without permission. This does not restrict the Wikipedia-derived text identified on each page, which remains available under CC BY-SA 4.0.
