- 5.« Le paysage », littéralement « les monts et les fleuves ». Ce binôme acquiert conventionnellement la signification de notre concept unique de « paysage » adopté dans la traduction — sa brièveté le rendant d'un emploi plus commode dans la phrase —, ne conservant l'original « monts et fleuves » que dans les passages où le terme a un rôle plus actif et concret, et où il sert le mieux la beauté poétique du texte. Mais que le lecteur se rappelle: a) que le mot « paysage » s'exprime en chinois par l'union dialectique de deux complémentaires-opposés « monts et fleuves »; b) que l'expression « monts et fleuves » n'est pas disjonctive: elle suggère en chinois une notion unitaire, celle de « paysage » (...).

Le Dao du Ciel et de la Terre est étendu, profond, haut, lumineux... ».
