Edward Gorey

John Gorey (February 22, 1925 – April 15, 2000) was an American writer, Tony Award-winning costume designer, and artist, noted for his own illustrated books as well as cover art and illustration for books by other writers. His characteristic pen-and-ink drawings often depict vaguely unsettling narrative scenes in Victorian and Edwardian settings.

The caricaturist was born Edward Saint John Gorey in Chicago and died in Hyannis. Edward Gorey was educated at Harvard University and School of the Art Institute of Chicago.

Among the works are The Curious Sofa, The Doubtful Guest and The Fantod Pack. The work spans literary nonsense and surrealist literature. Languages used include English. Honours include Bram Stoker Award for Lifetime Achievement and Tony Award for Best Costume Design.
