Atacama Large Millimeter Array

The Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) is an astronomical interferometer of 66 radio telescopes in the Atacama Desert of northern Chile, which observe electromagnetic radiation at millimeter and submillimeter wavelengths. The array has been constructed on the elevation Chajnantor plateau – near the Llano de Chajnantor Observatory and the Atacama Pathfinder Experiment. This location was chosen for its high elevation and low humidity, factors which are crucial to reduce noise and decrease signal attenuation due to Earth's atmosphere.

Atacama Large Millimeter Array

This image shows the cryostat of an Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) antenna populated with 10 receivers for the first time. The receivers pick up the signals from outer space at specific frequency bands, covering a window from 950 to 35 GHz, and are stored in a cryostat that cools them down to temperatures as low as -269°C. The installation of the "Band 2" receivers, initiated
