Frédéric Villot
Illustration — Marie-Joseph Frédéric Villot Marie-Joseph Frédéric Villot (31 October 1809 – 27 May 1875) was a French printmaker and friend of the prominent Romantic painter Eugène Delacroix, was also an art historian, who served as paintings curator of the Louvre Museum from 1848 to 1861. Frédéric Villot was born at Liège, a possession of the Napoleonic Empire, he died in Paris.

- 3.Dans une lettre à Dutilleux, Delacroix donne son avis sur la restauration menée par le musée du Louvre : « La coloration jaune des vernis accumulés par le temps, qui s’étendait également aux clairs, mettait une sorte de liaison entre ces clairs et ces ombres. Aujourd’hui la proportion est dérangée, c’est-à-dire que les ombres sont foncées et les clairs ont un éclat si vif, – celui que le peintre avait voulu y mettre, – que l’aspect des tableaux a quelque chose de métallique et de monotone, à cause de l’aspect uniformément sombre des parties ombrées. C’est, au reste, l’effet qui se produit presque constamment sur tous les dévernissages. Il serait à souhaiter qu’on ne vernît jamais. »
