He usually signed his early German work as Alexander von Salzmann, Alexander Salzmann or A. Salzmann. His career connected Munich Jugendstil, the artistic circle around Wassily Kandinsky and Marianne von Werefkin, the experimental theatre at Hellerau, the avant-garde culture of revolutionary Tiflis and the French circle surrounding the spiritual teacher George Gurdjieff. Salzmann is best known for designing and implementing the innovative architectural lighting system of the Festspielhaus Hellerau, where he collaborated with Émile Jaques-Dalcroze, Adolphe Appia and Heinrich Tessenow. Salzmann was born in Tiflis, now Tbilisi, into the German community of the South Caucasus. His ancestors were Protestant farmers from Swabia who had migrated during the early nineteenth century to Elisabeththal, now Asureti, one of the German agricultural settlements established in Georgia while it formed part of the Russian Empire. His grandfather later moved the family from Elisabeththal to Tiflis. His father, Albert Salzmann (1833–1897), became a prominent architect and married the daughter of a master builder from Saint Petersburg. Albert Salzmann's works included the Temple of Glory, a building later occupied by the Georgian National Gallery. The family maintained a cultivated and socially open household in Tiflis and encouraged Alexander's early interests in painting, music, drama and stagecraft. Salzmann received his initial education in Tiflis and began studying painting in Moscow in 1892. He was fluent in Russian, German, French and English.

At the end of August 1903 Salzmann travelled with Werefkin to Carteret in Normandy. Paintings produced during this journey have been described as early examples of his use of cloisonnist form, with broad areas of colour enclosed by strong linear contours. During the return journey Salzmann and Werefkin visited Paris. They studied paintings by James McNeill Whistler, Ignacio Zuloaga, Édouard Manet, Claude Monet, Pierre-Auguste Renoir and Paul Cézanne in the Louvre and other collections.

Salzmann's Munich practice extended beyond easel painting. From about 1906 he worked as a freelance designer for the Deutsche Werkstätten für Handwerkskunst, producing designs for textiles, interiors and decorative objects. In 1906 and 1907, at the invitation of Fritz Erler, Salzmann assisted with the fresco cycle Die vier Jahreszeiten ("The Four Seasons") in the Muschelsaal of the Kurhaus Wiesbaden. The rediscovery of his contribution during the later twentieth century broadened the understanding of his work beyond illustration and theatrical lighting. Before 1910, Gustav Pauli, then director of the Kunsthalle Bremen, organised an exhibition of Salzmann's gouaches. Pauli later recalled the lightly executed works and their successful reception.

Salzmann's graphic and painted work shows an early engagement with Japanese visual composition. A 2011 exhibition at the Schloßmuseum Murnau on Japanese influences among the artists of the Blue Rider circle drew renewed attention to his work as a practitioner of Japonisme. Features associated with Japanese colour woodcuts in Salzmann's work include extreme vertical formats, asymmetrical or diagonal arrangements, the cropping of figures and buildings by the edges of the composition, strong contours and the use of brush-stroke borders around the image. He sometimes employed these devices even in works whose subjects derived from Russian religion or folklore. By 1902 Salzmann had also begun supplementing his signature or monogram with characters imitating East Asian script. His use of such devices preceded the better-known personal seals later adopted by artists including Franz Marc. The Japanese influence did not constitute a separate phase of his career. Its linear economy, flattened space and interest in rhythmic visual structure contributed to the decorative and scenographic language that he later developed at Hellerau.

In 1910 Salzmann moved to Hellerau, the garden city established outside Dresden through the ideals of the German Lebensreform movement. He became associated with the Festspielhaus and, from 1911, with the institute of music and rhythm directed by Émile Jaques-Dalcroze. The institute was conceived as a laboratory in which music, bodily movement, education, architecture and visual design could be studied as interdependent arts. Salzmann became one of the principal collaborators of Jaques-Dalcroze and the Swiss stage theorist Adolphe Appia. Appia had argued that modern theatre should replace painted illusionistic scenery with three-dimensional architectural forms, mobile light and rhythmically trained bodies. Salzmann provided much of the technical experimentation through which these proposals became practicable. The institute's festival theatre, designed by Heinrich Tessenow, rejected the traditional division between a framed stage and a darkened auditorium. Its Great Hall had no permanent proscenium arch or raised stage; performers and spectators occupied a common architectural volume in which platforms, steps and geometric units could be rearranged for particular exercises and productions. Salzmann probably also designed the institute's emblem, a modified form of the yin and yang symbol intended to represent the relationship of body and spirit. It was installed on the building's pediment and remained associated with the Dalcroze movement.

At Hellerau Salzmann met Jeanne-Marie Allemand, later Jeanne de Salzmann. Born in Reims in 1889 and raised in Geneva, she had studied piano, composition and conducting at the Geneva Conservatory before training in Jaques-Dalcroze's system of eurhythmics. She became a teacher of rhythmic movement at Hellerau. The couple married in Geneva on 6 September 1912. Their daughter, Nathalie de Salzmann de Etievan (1919–2007), was born in Tiflis. She later married Jacques Etievan and moved to Caracas, where she helped establish the Venezuelan branch of the Gurdjieff movement and founded an educational institution influenced by Gurdjieff's ideas. Jeanne later had a son, Michel de Salzmann (1923–2001). Some modern scholarship identifies Gurdjieff as Michel's biological father, while public biographical notices generally identify him only as Jeanne's son. Michel used the de Salzmann surname and was raised within the family circle. A psychiatrist by profession, he later succeeded Jeanne as a leading figure within the network of Gurdjieff Foundations. Michel married Josée de Salzmann and had a son and a daughter. His son, the physician Alexandre Georges de Salzmann, later became president of the Institut G. I. Gurdjieff in Paris and of the International Association of Gurdjieff Foundations.

Salzmann was responsible for transforming Appia's conception of active, expressive light into a functioning technical system. Rather than directing a small number of conventional stage lamps at performers and scenery, he treated the walls and ceiling of the Great Hall as parts of the lighting apparatus. Approximately 3,000 electric lamps were placed behind translucent linen stretched across the architectural surfaces. The lamps were centrally controlled through a console sometimes described as a "light organ", allowing changes of intensity to be coordinated with music and movement. The installation produced diffuse illumination without the obvious shadows and fixed perspective associated with painted scenery. It could nevertheless be combined with more directional lighting to model bodies, platforms and architectural forms. The result was described as a "light-producing space" rather than merely an illuminated room. Salzmann also designed lightweight prismatic units made of wooden frames covered with fabric. Lamps placed inside these forms allowed them to glow, while their modular construction enabled them to serve as walls, platforms or stair-like arrangements. They could divide the hall without producing the immobile illusion of conventional stage scenery. The installation extended illumination into the spectators' area, weakening the separation between audience and performance. Instead of concealing the audience in darkness while displaying a theatrical illusion, the system created a shared field in which spectators, performers, architecture and light belonged to the same visual composition. Later scenographic scholarship has treated this as an early model of environmental and immersive performance. The distinction between Appia's theory and Salzmann's technical and artistic authorship was sometimes obscured in subsequent histories of modern theatre. Appia supplied much of the aesthetic programme, but Salzmann designed, constructed and patented central features of the Hellerau lighting apparatus.

The outbreak of the First World War ended Hellerau's international festival activity. Salzmann returned to the Russian Empire and worked in Moscow with the director Alexander Tairov at the Kamerny Theatre. For the 1916 production of Innokenty Annensky's Thamyris Kitharodos, he adapted aspects of his Hellerau lighting practice to Tairov's theatre. The sets and costumes were designed by Alexandra Exter. The production became an important example of the Kamerny Theatre's synthesis of movement, geometric scenography, colour and illumination. In 1917 Alexandre and Jeanne de Salzmann settled in Tiflis. They opened a school of music and rhythmic movement, where Jeanne taught the Dalcroze method. Alexandre worked as a painter, stage designer and lighting specialist. In 1918 he became artistic director of the Tbilisi Opera and Ballet Theatre, designing scenery for productions that included Tchaikovsky's The Queen of Spades, Offenbach's The Tales of Hoffmann, Eduard Nápravník's Dubrovsky, Dimitri Arakishvili's The Legend of Shota Rustaveli and Zakaria Paliashvili's Abesalom and Eteri. He also participated in exhibitions organised by the Caucasian Society for the Promotion of Fine Arts and the Small Circle in 1918 and 1919. Works from this period included symbolic and mythological paintings such as Flora, Diana, Minerva and Orpheus. Some returned to themes he had treated in his earlier illustration and theatrical work.

In 1919 the composer Thomas de Hartmann and his wife Olga introduced Alexandre and Jeanne de Salzmann to George Gurdjieff, who had arrived in Tiflis with a group of pupils. The de Salzmanns became members of the circle that established Gurdjieff's Institute for the Harmonious Development of Man. Jeanne's Dalcroze class provided one of the settings in which Gurdjieff began systematically teaching the bodily exercises that became known as the Movements. Scholars of Western esotericism and dance have therefore identified her eurhythmic training as one of the immediate contexts in which Gurdjieff's practice emerged, while emphasising the differences between the Movements and Dalcroze's educational method. Jeanne taught and demonstrated the Movements. Alexandre contributed his knowledge of theatre, colour, costume, rhythm and lighting. He prepared drawings, costume designs and visual material for Gurdjieff's projected ballet The Struggle of the Magicians. The ballet was never completed as a theatrical production, although its scenarios, music, dances and surviving designs remained important within Gurdjieff's early presentation of his teaching. Gurdjieff's emphasis on coordinated bodily movement gave Salzmann's theatrical work a new context. At Hellerau he had used light to clarify the forms and rhythms of movement; in Gurdjieff's teaching, movement also became an exercise in attention and the coordinated functioning of body, feeling and thought. Salzmann's later notes on theatre connect visual form with the possible transformation of performers and spectators, although they do not present a complete theoretical system. When political conditions in Georgia deteriorated, Gurdjieff and his pupils left Tiflis in 1920 and travelled through Batumi to Constantinople. The de Salzmanns accompanied the group and subsequently moved to France. The de Salzmann family's later prominence within the Gurdjieff movement derived principally from Jeanne's role after her husband's death. She remained close to Gurdjieff until 1949 and subsequently organised the principal institutional line of his teaching. Michel de Salzmann succeeded her after her death in 1990, and Michel's son Alexandre Georges de Salzmann later became president of the Paris institute and the international association of affiliated foundations. Alexandre Gustave de Salzmann's own contribution belonged chiefly to the movement's earlier artistic and theatrical formation in Tiflis, Constantinople and France.

In 1921 Salzmann was invited by Jacques Hébertot to work at the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées in Paris. He adapted elements of the Hellerau lighting system to the theatre and became acquainted with figures including Louis Jouvet and Lugné-Poe. He worked on a production of Debussy's Pelléas et Mélisande presented at the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées during the 1921–22 season. The playwright Henri-René Lenormand described Salzmann as one of the most remarkable craftsmen participating in the contemporary renovation of the stage. When Gurdjieff established his Institute at the Prieuré des Basses Loges near Avon, Seine-et-Marne, in 1922, Salzmann helped decorate and equip its rooms and performance spaces. He also produced visual materials associated with the Movements and Gurdjieff's theatrical projects. During the later 1920s Salzmann worked in Paris as a painter, decorator, antiquarian and interior designer. He painted murals and decorative schemes for private residences, although many of these works have not been located. His public artistic career became less visible than it had been in Munich and Hellerau as his attention increasingly centred upon Gurdjieff's teaching and the instruction of a smaller circle.

Salzmann met the Czech-French painter Josef Šíma in Paris in the early 1920s. Šíma later became associated with the literary group and journal Le Grand Jeu. In November 1930 he introduced René Daumal to Salzmann. Daumal had already spent much of his adolescence investigating dreams, trance, intoxication, Sanskrit philosophy and what the Grand Jeu called "experimental metaphysics". His conversations with Salzmann confronted him with the distinction between possessing ideas about awakening and undertaking sustained practical work involving the body, emotions and intellect. Daumal subsequently entered the circle associated with Alexandre and Jeanne de Salzmann and remained connected with Gurdjieff's teaching until his death. Salzmann was Daumal's immediate teacher rather than merely an intermediary who introduced him to Gurdjieff. Daumal later compared philosophy to a map that could prepare for or summarise a journey but could not replace the journey itself. His literary work after meeting Salzmann placed increasing emphasis upon attention, bodily existence, group discipline and the difference between verbal knowledge and transformation. Daumal dedicated Mount Analogue, written between 1939 and 1944 and published posthumously in 1952, to Alexandre de Salzmann. The novel's guide, Father Pierre Sogol, combines encyclopaedic curiosity, practical ingenuity, spiritual authority and comic unconventionality. Although the character is not a straightforward biographical representation, critics and readers close to Daumal have interpreted him as partly modelled upon Salzmann. The novel's image of a mountain whose base is accessible but whose summit exceeds ordinary human means develops a theme central to Daumal's relationship with Salzmann: intellectual understanding may bring a person to the beginning of a path, but further progress requires practice, guidance and participation with others.

Salzmann suffered from tuberculosis during his final years. He died on 3 March 1934 at the Le Belvédère sanatorium in Leysin, Switzerland, aged 60. He was buried in the Allemand–de Salzmann family plot at the Cimetière des Rois in Geneva. Jeanne de Salzmann and other members of the family were later buried in the same plot. • Illustration — The Allemand–de Salzmann family grave at the Cimetière des Rois in Geneva Daumal, who also later developed tuberculosis, continued to regard Salzmann as a decisive influence and maintained contact with Jeanne after Alexandre's death.

Salzmann's most widely studied contribution remains the Hellerau lighting installation. It did not merely replace gaslight with electricity or increase the visibility of actors. It treated illumination as an architectural material whose intensity, direction and diffusion could be composed over time in relation to sound, space and bodily movement. Appia is frequently credited with the modern theory of expressive stage light, but Salzmann supplied much of the technical design and practical experimentation through which this theory became an operational theatrical environment. Original documentation includes German patents filed by Salzmann for elements of the Hellerau apparatus in 1912 and 1913. The system anticipated several later developments in performance design: the replacement of painted perspective scenery by three-dimensional architectural units; centralised control of changing light states; integration of auditorium and stage; and the use of illumination to shape an audience's bodily and atmospheric experience of space. Modern studies of scenography, immersive performance and digital opera have continued to cite Hellerau as an early model of an environment generated through light and movement.

Alexandre's association with Gurdjieff was also the beginning of Jeanne de Salzmann's much longer role in the history of the Gurdjieff movement. She remained close to Gurdjieff until his death in 1949 and subsequently became the principal organiser of the institutional line of his teaching. She guided centres in Paris, London, New York and Caracas and placed particular emphasis upon the preservation and teaching of the Movements. Her Dalcroze background helped link the experimental body culture of Hellerau with the earliest public form of Gurdjieff's movement practice in Tiflis. Scholars have situated this connection within a broader early-twentieth-century field of eurhythmics, modern dance, occult performance and body-based spiritual disciplines. Jeanne also collaborated with the theatre and film director Peter Brook. She participated in the preparation of his 1979 film Meetings with Remarkable Men, whose final movement demonstrations provided an authorised, although deliberately incomplete, cinematic representation of Gurdjieff's exercises. After Jeanne's death in Paris on 24 May 1990, Michel de Salzmann assumed a leading role within the Gurdjieff Foundation and held it until his death in 2001. A psychiatrist by profession, he also wrote the entry on Gurdjieff for the first edition of the Encyclopedia of Religion. His son Alexandre Georges subsequently continued the family's institutional involvement. Jeanne's notebooks were prepared posthumously for publication as The Reality of Being: The Fourth Way of Gurdjieff (2010). The project had initially been encouraged by Nathalie de Salzmann de Etievan.

Salzmann's lighting was demonstrated in Jaques-Dalcroze's rhythmic exercises and in Hellerau productions of Gluck's Orpheus and Eurydice in 1912 and 1913. Appia designed the principal spatial arrangements, while Salzmann realised the lighting and collaborated in their scenographic treatment. Contemporary observers particularly remarked upon the descent of Orpheus into the underworld, in which light, platforms and bodily movement made the architectural space appear to participate in the drama. He also designed lighting and scenographic elements for the 1913 production of Paul Claudel's L'Annonce faite à Marie. The programme book included contributions by Claudel, Martin Buber, Wolf Dohrn and Salzmann. Salzmann's essay "Licht, Belichtung und Beleuchtung" ("Light, Exposure and Illumination") distinguished light as a material and perceptual condition from the narrower function of making objects visible. He described illumination as a force capable of joining colours, lines, surfaces, bodies and movement into a changing whole. Through the festivals of 1912 and 1913, the Hellerau experiments were observed by theatre directors, dancers, composers and writers from across Europe. Visitors included Konstantin Stanislavski, Sergei Diaghilev, Vaslav Nijinsky, George Bernard Shaw, Max Reinhardt, Sergei Rachmaninoff, Claudel and Buber. The work of Appia, Jaques-Dalcroze and Salzmann influenced later approaches to modern dance, actor training, theatre architecture and lighting.

From 1900 Salzmann contributed illustrations and caricatures to the Munich magazine Jugend, signing his work as Alexander von Salzmann, Alexander Salzmann or A. Salzmann. His drawings and gouaches treated theatre, upper-class leisure, courtship, marriage and the changing relations between men and women. Women often emerge as the more intelligent or socially powerful figures in these comic situations. His figures were frequently dressed in stylised Rococo or Biedermeier clothing, allowing him to combine contemporary social satire with decorative historical costume. Other drawings criticised the aristocracy, imperial politics and social inequalities in the Russian Empire. • Illustration — Herzschmerz (1905) • Illustration — Der Hochzeitsparagraph § 300 (1905) Salzmann also collaborated with Niemeyer and other Munich artists on decorative work for the Marionetten-Theater Münchner Künstler. The project brought him into direct contact with the possibilities of combining painting, costume, architecture, lighting and dramatic movement within a single production.

Salzmann's surviving visual work ranges from Jugendstil illustration and social caricature to decorative painting, landscapes, mythological subjects and theatrical design. His early drawings for Jugend combine elegant linear composition with comic or satirical situations, while his paintings move between cloisonnist simplification, Symbolist subject matter and decorative experiment. • Illustration — In Erwartung (1909) A group of his paintings and theatrical designs is preserved in Georgia, including works held by the Georgian National Museum. Following his death, Salzmann's work was rarely exhibited for several decades. Works were shown at the Museum Wiesbaden in 1983 and at the Schloßmuseum Murnau in 2002. The Murnau museum's 2011 exhibition on the Blue Rider and Japanese art further contributed to his rediscovery as a painter and graphic artist rather than solely as a theatre technician.
