Ahlschlager was born to John and Louise Ahlschlager, German Jews, and had one sister named Ella. John Ahlschlager and his brother, Frederick, were both prominent architects in Chicago.

The Wedgwood apartment building in San Antonio, Texas, United States was built in 1965. The modern style building was designed by Walter W. Ahlschlager, Sr. The building is currently called Ensemble and is for 55+ residents only. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on Febuary 21, 2017.
