It was founded in 1839 as the Microscopical Society of London making it the oldest organisation of its kind in the world. In 1866, the Society gained its royal charter and took its current name.

Letter on verso of portrait of W. H. Dallinger. It reads: Royal Microscopical Society, 20, Hanover Square, London. Dear Sir, In reply to your letters of the 2nd and 6th inst. the Rev. Dr. Dallinger was President of the Royal Microscopical Society from 1884-1887 and Secretary from 1891-1907. He was also Vice-President in 1908 and 1909. An Obituary Notice appears in the December issue of the Journal
