Robert Motherwell

Robert Motherwell (January 24, 1915 – July 16, 1991) was an American abstract expressionist painter, printmaker, and editor of The Dada Painters and Poets: an Anthology. He was one of the youngest of the New York School, which also included Willem de Kooning, Jackson Pollock, and Mark Rothko. Robert Motherwell was trained in philosophy, Motherwell then became an artist regarded as among the most articulate spokesmen and the founders of the abstract expressionist painters.

Robert Motherwell (1915–1991) was a collagist, draftsperson and editor, among other activities, of American nationality. The collagist was born in Aberdeen and died in Provincetown.

Robert Motherwell was educated at Columbia University, Harvard University and Stanford University. The collagist worked for Black Mountain College and Hunter College and was a member of American Academy of Arts and Letters and American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Robert Motherwell worked in Asheville, Boston and Eugene, among others. Activity centred on painting. Robert Motherwell was associated with abstract expressionism.

The work spans abstract art. Languages used include English. Honours include Gold Medal of Merit in the Fine Arts, Harvard Centennial Medal and National Medal of Arts.
