Early life and education
Early life and education
Luis Alvarez Roure was born in Arecibo, Puerto Rico. From childhood he demonstrated an interest in drawing and developed his skills largely self-taught. His parents encouraged him to pursue formal art lessons, but he initially declined. He also developed a great interest in music and his father enrolled him in piano lessons. After completing his undergraduate studies in piano performance in Puerto Rico, Roure moved to New York City to continue his studies in piano under the Cuban-American pedagogue Germán Diez Nieto at the City University of New York, where he completed a Master of Arts in Music. While pursuing his musical studies, he enrolled at the Art Students League of New York, where he studied painting, drawing, and anatomy with the American realist painter Nelson Shanks. He studied with Shanks for approximately six years and later described the experience as having a major influence on his approach to painting and a turning point in his artistic development.
