Louis Le Breton

Le Breton studied medicine and took part in Dumont d'Urville's second voyage aboard the Astrolabe. After the official illustrator of the expedition died, Le Breton replaced him.

Après deux circumnavigations effectuées entre 1822 et 1829, Dumont d’Urville rêve d’une troisième expédition océanienne. Louis-Philippe lui en donne l’opportunité en y ajoutant la mission de pousser jusqu’en Antarctique. Le capitaine de vaisseau accepte, même s’il préfère « trois années de navigation sous le ciel embrasé des contrées équatoriales à deux mois de séjour dans les régions glaciales ».
