Early life and education
Early life and education
Turner received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in graphic design from the School of Fine Arts at Boston University in 1961. Her formal training was in visual design rather than photography, a background that would later strongly influence her photographic practice. After graduation, she worked professionally as a graphic designer in New York City, including designing book jackets.
Photographic career
Photographic career
Turner began taking photographs in 1972 while living in New York. Although her early work was not limited to architecture, her focus shifted decisively after she encountered architect Peter Eisenman in the mid-1970s. Through Eisenman, Turner was introduced to a circle of avant-garde architects, and architecture became the primary subject matter of her work. In the mid-1970s, Turner photographed renovations at The Cooper Union in Cornwall, Connecticut (1976). In 1980, Turner published her first monograph, Judith Turner: Photographs Five Architects.
