Regnier choisi de représenter le personnage principal, Robert Paterson, un écossais du 18e siècle, qui à la fin de la vie décide de voyager à travers l'Ecosse pour re-graver les tombeaux des martyrs presbythériens de Covenanter au 17e siècle.
