George Steiner

Francis George Steiner, FBA (April 23, 1929 – February 3, 2020) was a French and American literary critic, essayist, philosopher, novelist and educator. He wrote extensively about the relationship between language, literature and society, as well as the impact of the Holocaust. A 2001 article in The Guardian described Steiner as a "polyglot and polymath".

George Steiner was educated at Balliol College, Harvard University and Lycée français de New York, among others. The cultural critic worked for Harvard University, Princeton University and The Economist, among others and was a member of American Academy of Arts and Sciences, Bavarian Academy of Fine Arts and British Academy, among others. George Steiner held the position of Booker Prize judge. Activity centred on comparative literature, creative and professional writing and literary criticism.
