Biografia
Mayr si è formato in ambito musicale a Bolzano e Firenze, completando gli studi al Conservatorio di Firenze nel 1965. Negli anni Sessanta lavorò con Pietro Grossi allo Studio di Fonologia Musicale di Firenze e si inserì nel contesto della sperimentazione musicale fiorentina del secondo dopoguerra.
Tra il 1970 e il 1973 visse a Montréal, dove frequentò la Faculty of Music della McGill University. In seguito insegnò musica elettronica e sperimentale al Conservatorio di Firenze dal 1973 al 1990, e partecipò a iniziative di ricerca e divulgazione sul rapporto fra musica, tempo, ambiente e paesaggio sonoro. Alcuni suoi studenti si sono affermati nel campo della ricerca musicale: tra questi Lelio Camilleri, Francesco Giomi e Francesco Michi.
Attività artistica
La ricerca di Mayr si è concentrata sul rapporto tra suono, spazio e tempo, con particolare attenzione al soundscape e alle pratiche di ascolto consapevole. La bibliografia curata dal Centro Studi Luigi Dallapiccola documenta un’attività ampia e continuativa tra composizione, scrittura teorica e partecipazione a convegni e seminari.
Nel suo percorso rientrano anche esperienze legate al World Soundscape Project e alla riflessione sul tempo come categoria estetica e sociale. La sua figura è stata ricordata dalla critica come quella di un autore importante nell’ambito della sperimentazione musicale italiana e delle pratiche di ascolto ambientale.
Una parte dei materiali artistici e di documentazione sono stati depositati dal compositore presso l'Archivio di Tempo Reale a Firenze.
