It was not awarded for any special act of courage or merit. Officers wore it in silver and NCOs and other ranks in metal. It was worn on the tunic, with no ribbon. A Russian version of the order was completely identical in size and shape to the Prussian Order of the Iron Cross, differing only in that it had no date and monogram of the king.

Het zou hier een juwelierskopie of een gewijzigd officieel overhandigd stuk betreffen, gevat in een zilveren frame waardoor het vaak verward wordt met een 'Eisernes Kreuz 1. Klasse 1813'. De kwaliteit van afwerking van het zilveren frame is naar verluidt bijzonder laag. Navraag bij de heer Maarten P. Bakker, collectiebeheerder van Huis Doorn, leverde geen bevestiging, noch een absolute ontkenning op.
