Architecture and history of the Stadthalle
Architecture and history of the Stadthalle
Historical documentation published by English Wikipedia records a clear disagreement regarding the architect responsible for the 1912 structure: the lead section of the publication attributes the architectural design to Berlin architect Richard Zeil, whereas the detailed historical narrative within the same publication states that the building was erected according to the designs of Richard Seel. When completed, the Stadthalle operated as a primary cultural venue for the city of Königsberg, featuring three major concert halls named after the project's key initiators. These comprised the Körtesaal, named in honour of Siegfried Körte; the Krohnesaal, named after Theodor Krohne; and the Gebauhrsaal, named after Carl Julius Gebauhr. The facility contained a main auditorium seating 1,600 spectators, which regularly accommodated performances by the Königsberger Philharmonie, as well as a public restaurant and a garden café situated directly in front of the castle pond.

Following the outbreak of the First World War, the Stadthalle building was adapted for military use as an army hospital. During the Second World War, the structure suffered catastrophic damage during the air raids of 26 August 1944 in the Bombing of Königsberg. This restoration project concluded in 1986, leading to the formal relocation of the Kaliningrad Regional Museum of History and Arts into the restored building in 1991. The Nature Hall documents the Baltic Sea, the Curonian Lagoon, the Curonian forest, the Poyma River, bogs, mixed forests, local minerals, and animal specimens. The War Hall focuses on the Second World War, featuring military equipment, uniforms, and a large-scale diorama representing the storming of Königsberg.
The institution's coverage of twentieth-century military conflict and post-war reconstruction is concentrated within two dedicated permanent galleries. Originally erected in 1912 as the Stadthalle Königsberg multi-purpose performing arts complex, the structure was planned in 1907 under Oberbürgermeister Siegfried Körte and included concert spaces named the Körtesaal, Krohnesaal, and Gebauhrsaal after Körte and fellow initiators Theodor Krohne and Carl Julius Gebauhr. The building served as a military hospital during the First World War and suffered extensive destruction during the bombing of Königsberg on 26 August 1944. Post-war developments are presented in the Memory Horizons Hall, which documents the daily life of early Soviet settlers, products from the region's initial industrial enterprises including amber goods, and dismantled monuments of Vladimir Lenin.
