He studied at the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten and was a pupil of August Allebé, Bart van Hove, and Frans Stracké, receiving his diploma from the Quellinusschool. He was the teacher of Abraham Beck and Abraham Lopes Suasso. He died in The Hague.
