Eugen Cicero

Biography
Born in Vad, Romania, to Teodor and Livia Ciceu, an Orthodox priest and professional singer respectively, he began to play the piano at the age of four. Aged six, he performed a Mozart piano concerto with the symphony orchestra of Cluj. Although he graduated from the National Conservatory in Bucharest, he abandoned a career as a conventional concert pianist and established his style between classical and jazz piano, introducing swing harmonies into baroque, classical and romantic compositions, often as spontaneous improvisations. In 1962, while touring East Berlin, Cicero fled to West Berlin. He spent the next two years in Switzerland, where he joined the "Kindli" orchestra of Joe Schmid. After returning to Germany, Cicero produced more than 70 recordings, some of them with the Berlin and Munich Philharmonic orchestras. He had numerous appearances on German TV and enjoyed much success while touring Japan. In 1976 he was awarded the Deutscher Schallplattenpreis for his interpretations of Franz Schubert. In 1982, Cicero moved to Switzerland, where he died in Zürich in 1997 from a cerebral apoplexy, aged 57. His younger brother Adrian Cicero is a jazz instrumentalist. His son Roger Cicero (1970–2016) was a renowned jazz singer.

D'autre part, c'est l'une des seules années de la carrière d'Eugen Cicero, où il y a un trou. Enfin, ce type de numérotation a été employé entre 1968 et 1970 par HÖR ZU (« Listen! »), une filiale éditrice discographique d'un magazine allemand de télévision spécialisé dans les publications Low budget. Du point de vue de la numérotion d'éditeur pure (voir le site Discogs.com, on se situe même sur l'année 1964, si on ne tient pas compte du « L » dans la référence Hör zu SHZE LP 87 ce qui est nettement improbable, puisque les Beatles n'ont chanté Come together en 1969. Enfin, on constate qu'Eugen Cicero, entre 1967 et 1970, après un succès mérité, se cherche et s'essaie dans plusieurs voies pour revenir finalement au Trio en 1970 : Eugen Cicero Quintet en 1968 et 2 musiques de films en 1967 et 1969. Ce disque avec des versions jazz de titres d'actualités récentes s'insère bien dans cette période, où il change aussi de label. Enfin, il ne faut pas oublier que la fin des années soixante est très difficile pour les publications de jazz, le succès des yéyés et du pop rock balaie tout sur son passage, de nombreuses maisons de disques non diversifiées connaissent alors des difficultés économiques allant jusqu'à leur disparition.
- 5.Datation supposée à partir des éléments discographiques, notamment la numérotation MPS et bien qu'il soit souvent crédité en 1965 à tort. La session d'enregistrement est bien datée du 04.Janvier et du 14 mars 1965. En revanche, il semble que l'album soit sorti en 1967, comme session inédite non avouée après le succès des 5 autres albums et le départ d'Allemagne du batteur suisse Charly Antolini.
- 6.Datation supposée à partir des éléments discographiques : la référence EMI Columbia C 052 28660 est donnée dans les discographies pour 1970.
- 7.Avec Hans Rettenbacher : autre pseudonyme de et Dae Boon : autre pseudonyme de Dai Bowen. Certains morceaux de cet album présentent un premier trio de formation avec Michael Dennert à la batterie et Jürgen Ehlers à la contrebasse datant probablement de la fin 1969 avant qu'il ne rencontre son bassiste fétiche des années 1970 : Johann Anton Rettenbacher. Liés d'amitiés, ils vont ensemble enregistrer de nombreux albums.
