Emerico Lobo de Mesquita

He spent his final years as an organist in Rio de Janeiro. Mesquita earned his living within the network of lay religious associations that supported music in the mining towns. He played the organ, directed singers and instrumentalists, supplied music for feast days and civic ceremonies, and held administrative offices in local brotherhoods. His appointments included long periods with Carmelite third orders in Tejuco, Vila Rica and Rio de Janeiro. The details of his birth, family and musical education remain uncertain, but his career can be followed through contracts, payments and manuscripts from the 1770s until his death. His accepted works are all sacred and vocal, usually written for a small choir or vocal quartet with strings, continuo and occasional winds. They include Masses, music for Holy Week, Marian antiphons, litanies, psalms, funeral offices and settings of the Te Deum. Plainchant, solo voices and full ensemble passages often alternate within the same service. Among his best-known compositions are the Missa para Quarta-Feira de Cinzas, Dominica in Palmis, Tercio, Salve Regina and the A-minor Te Deum. Musicians in Minas Gerais continued to copy and perform it through the nineteenth century, and manuscript sets entered the archives of groups such as the Orquestra Lira Sanjoanense. Francisco Curt Lange brought the repertory to a wider concert and recording audience in the twentieth century, while later editors returned to Mesquita's own manuscripts and other early copies to prepare critical editions for smaller, historically informed ensembles. Mesquita is the patron of chair 4 of the Academia Brasileira de Música.

The details of Lobo de Mesquita's birth remain uncertain. The date 12 October 1746 and Serro as his birthplace were first published by Geraldo Dutra de Moraes, who also named him as the natural son of the Portuguese José Lobo de Mesquita and an enslaved woman, Joaquina Emerenciana. No baptismal record or other contemporary document has been found to confirm this account. Francisco Curt Lange later searched for the relevant register without success and advised caution, even though Moraes's version became widely repeated in reference works, concert programmes and recordings. A birth sometime between 1740 and 1750 is considered plausible because Mesquita was already directing music for a public ceremony in Serro in 1774. Maria Inês Junqueira Guimarães estimated that a musician trusted with such responsibility was probably in his twenties or thirties. His work in Serro during the 1770s is firmly documented, but there is no proof that he was born there. His family background is equally difficult to establish. Guimarães accepts the possibility that he was of mixed ancestry and may have been the son of José Lobo de Mesquita and Joaquina Emerenciana. Sérgio Pires considers the evidence too limited to settle either his parentage or his racial and legal status. Documents from his career call him an organist, music director and, in a Carmelite agreement of 1789, an alferes. These titles tell us something about his work and social standing, but they do not confirm claims that he was a pardo forro or establish the identity of his parents. His musical training is another open question. Moraes named Father Manuel da Costa Dantas as his teacher and called Dantas the chapel master of the mother church in Serro. Lange could not confirm that appointment and instead found Dantas serving as a priest in Tejuco. Manuel de Almeida Silva and Miguel Bernardo Moreira have also been proposed as possible teachers, though no teacher-student relationship has been documented. Mesquita probably received his training in Serro or Tejuco, but the details of that education remain unknown.

Mesquita may have been working as a musician in Serro as early as 1765. Maria Eremita de Souza told Francisco Curt Lange that his name was listed in a municipal payment book among the musicians engaged for royal celebrations. Since the entry itself has not been located, 1774 remains the first firm date in his career. On 26 December 1774, the Serro chamber paid him 37 oitavas of gold for directing the music at the Corpus Christi celebrations. He received another payment for civic festivities in October 1776. These were directing assignments, which meant gathering the singers and instrumentalists and taking responsibility for the performance. His responsibilities grew in 1777. On 25 August, he agreed to provide the music for ceremonies following the death of Joseph I of Portugal and for festivities celebrating the marriage of Joseph, Prince of Brazil. The contract offers the clearest picture of Mesquita's early work as a music director in Serro. Another payment from the Brotherhood of the Blessed Sacrament names a musician only as "Joze Joaqm". He was paid fourteen oitavas for music on Sundays and during Holy Week. This may have been Lobo de Mesquita, though the shortened name leaves room for doubt.

Mesquita moved from Serro to Arraial do Tejuco, present-day Diamantina, sometime before 1783. The exact year is unknown. His first dated compositions belong to the years around this move: the Missa para Quarta-Feira de Cinzas of 1778, the Regina coeli laetare of 1779, and the Palm Sunday music of 1782. By 1783, he was working with Father Manuel de Almeida Silva on the organ commissioned by the Brotherhood of the Blessed Sacrament for the church of Santo Antônio. Almeida Silva built the instrument, while Mesquita assisted with the work and became its regular organist. He held that position from 1784 until 1798 and also played for feasts of the Brotherhood of Our Lady of the Rosary. He later took another organist post with the Third Order of Our Lady of Mount Carmel. Payments began in 1787, and a contract signed in 1789 confirmed his appointment. He remained with the Carmelites until 1795. Mesquita also took an active part in Tejuco's brotherhoods. He entered the Brotherhood of Our Lady of Mercy of the Crioulos on 25 January 1788. His wife, Tomásia Onofre do Lírio, joined in August, confirming that they were married by then. Teresa Ferreira, an enslaved woman in Mesquita's household, entered the same brotherhood in 1793 and worked for the confraternity. He served as judge of devotion in the Brotherhood of Our Lady of Health in 1789. From 1792, he held the offices of scribe, treasurer and judge in the Brotherhood of Our Lady of Amparo. These positions placed him inside the administration of the religious associations that organized much of the town's worship and music. The Carmelite contract of 1789 calls him an alferes, a junior militia rank. The title has sometimes been connected with the Terço da Infantaria dos Pardos, but the unit in which he served has not been found. Most of Mesquita's dated compositions come from his Tejuco years. In 1783 he wrote music for Holy Saturday and completed the devotional work titled Tercio. The Salve Regina followed in 1787. Alongside his church appointments, he composed, directed ensembles, taught music and played for services across the town.

Mesquita was living in Vila Rica, now Ouro Preto, by September 1798. On 1 September, he signed a contract with the Third Order of Our Lady of Mount Carmel. He agreed to provide the music and hire the singers and instrumentalists needed for its feast days. A little more than two weeks later, he and Tomásia joined the Confraternity of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, Mary and Joseph, Senhor dos Matosinhos, and Saint Michael of the Souls. His work in Vila Rica soon extended beyond the Carmelites. He directed the music for a triduum held by the Brotherhood of the Blessed Sacrament in 1798–99 and for its Forty Hours' Devotion the following year. In 1799, he also accepted a municipal contract covering four public celebrations. His Office and Mass for the Dead, dated 1798, was written near the beginning of his stay in the town. Marcos Coelho Neto, Francisco Gomes da Rocha, Florêncio José Ferreira Coutinho and Jerônimo de Souza Lobo were working for churches, brotherhoods and public ceremonies in Vila Rica during the same time. Mesquita entered this competitive musical world as an organist, composer and director. His Carmelite appointment ended in 1800. On 15 October, Francisco Gomes da Rocha took over the contract. Mesquita may have left Vila Rica shortly before or after that date, but nothing is known about the following year. He next emerges in Rio de Janeiro in December 1801.

On 16 December 1801, Mesquita became organist of the Third Order of Our Lady of Mount Carmel in Rio de Janeiro. His duties were more limited than they had been in Vila Rica. Instead of organizing all the music and musicians for the order's celebrations, he was hired specifically to play the organ. The appointment was renewed through the final years of his life. The Easter responsory Cum transisset, written around 1803, is the last composition that can be dated with confidence. It was intended for Matins on Easter Sunday. No other surviving work can be assigned clearly to his years in Rio de Janeiro. Mesquita received his last payment for the six months from November 1804 to April 1805. On 3 May, the Carmelites appointed Vicente Meireles Cordeiro as their new organist and stated that José Joaquim Emerico had died. He probably died in Rio de Janeiro around the middle of April 1805, though the exact day is unknown.

The Portuguese Crown barred regular religious orders from establishing convents in Minas Gerais, leaving much of the colony's organized worship in the hands of lay brotherhoods, confraternities and third orders. These associations collected entrance fees, annual dues and donations; built and maintained chapels; furnished altars; paid chaplains; and arranged Masses, funerals, processions and the feast of their patron. They also offered members burial places, prayers after death and, when funds permitted, help during illness or financial hardship. Third orders followed Carmelite or Franciscan rules but were made up of laypeople, and their admission requirements were generally stricter than those of ordinary brotherhoods. Music formed part of the spending for worship and ceremony. A brotherhood could make an annual agreement with a director for the recurring feasts in its calendar, or negotiate a separate adjustment for an extraordinary occasion. Municipal chambers also paid for music. In Vila Rica, the chamber used public auctions to select the company responsible for the regular official celebrations. Civic and church sponsorship often overlapped under the Portuguese system of royal patronage. Corpus Christi, for example, was a liturgical feast and a public ceremony financed by the chamber. Musicians were also hired for Holy Week, patronal feasts, novenas, processions, funerals, royal marriages and deaths, and services of thanksgiving such as the Te Deum. A "director of music" was the contractor responsible for delivering the agreed service, not necessarily the head of a permanent choir or orchestra. He engaged the singers and players, supplied the required repertory, led the performance and dealt with the institution that paid for it. He might also compose, sing, play an instrument or organ, and manage the distribution of payment among the group. Lobo de Mesquita's 1798 agreement with the Third Order of Carmel in Vila Rica made this responsibility explicit: he undertook to provide the works and musicians required for all its festivities. The groups assembled under these agreements were usually small. A common church ensemble had four or five singers, continuo and strings; horns, flutes or oboes could be added when the ceremony and budget allowed. The master signed the agreement in his own name and brought together the required performers. Hiring did not make them members of the sponsoring brotherhood, just as membership alone did not make a brother one of its paid musicians.

Music was an ofício, or skilled occupation, in the working vocabulary of colonial Minas Gerais. The dividing lines between composer, conductor, performer and teacher were loose. A musician might direct one group, play in another, teach pupils, copy or supply music, serve as an organist and accept civic work from a municipal chamber. Some musicians also played in militia units or earned money through another craft. Rachel Tupynambá de Ulhôa argues that Lobo de Mesquita should be understood as a skilled artisan dependent on brotherhoods and municipal patrons, correcting Curt Lange's more elevated image of an autonomous composer comparable to a European court musician. Annual contracts opened work to musicians who did not belong to the sponsoring institution, but they also left the director dependent on short agreements and competition from other groups. The director had to gather the performers and meet the institution's ceremonial requirements for the negotiated price. A contract could pass to another musician in the next financial year, as happened when Francisco Gomes da Rocha succeeded Lobo de Mesquita at the Third Order of Carmel in Vila Rica in 1800. Terms of colour and origin in eighteenth-century registers do not correspond neatly to modern racial categories. Entries from Minas use words such as branco, pardo, preto, crioulo, cabra and mulato, but their application varied with locality, legal condition, ancestry and social standing. Crioulo usually referred in late colonial Minas to a person of African descent born in Brazil and did not by itself establish whether that person was free or enslaved. Pardo could refer to colour and ancestry while also carrying a degree of distance from recent enslavement. Mulato sometimes had a pejorative force and was not always interchangeable with pardo. A missing colour designation cannot safely be read as proof that a person was white. Brotherhood names used this vocabulary openly: Minas had confraternities of homens pretos, homens crioulos and homens pardos, alongside institutions whose membership was drawn chiefly from affluent white residents. Each association's compromisso, or statute, fixed its admissions, dues, offices and religious obligations. The boundaries were not absolute, and one person could join more than one association. Membership offered burial, funeral Masses, mutual help and the chance to serve as judge, treasurer, scribe or member of the governing board. Militia service offered free men another set of titles and offices, and militia ensembles supplied musicians for military and public ceremonies. These openings did not remove the racial and legal hierarchy of a slave society; they gave free and freed people limited ways to seek income, standing and protection within it. Lobo de Mesquita took part in this institutional world as employee, contractor and brother. He and his wife, Tomásia Onofre do Lírio, joined the Brotherhood of Nossa Senhora das Mercês in Tejuco in 1788. He was judge of devotion in the Brotherhood of Nossa Senhora da Saúde in 1789 and later worked as scribe, treasurer and judge for the Brotherhood of Nossa Senhora do Amparo. In Vila Rica, he and Tomásia entered the Confraternity of the Sacred Heart and related devotions in September 1798. These were memberships or administrative offices. His Carmelite work, as organist in Tejuco and Rio de Janeiro and supplier of music in Vila Rica, was paid employment under contract. The 1789 Carmelite agreement in Tejuco gives him the title alferes. No military appointment has been found to confirm that he served in the Terço dos Pardos, so a connection with that unit remains possible but unsubstantiated. His membership in the Brotherhood of Mercês dos Homens Crioulos and in the Brotherhood of Amparo does not by itself provide a fixed personal racial classification. Some scholarship calls him mulato, but the absence of a baptismal entry or military file makes that designation less secure than older biographies imply. Mesquita was himself an enslaver. In 1793, Teresa Ferreira, an enslaved woman owned by him, was entered in the Mercês brotherhood as a service provider and a sister. He could hold confraternal office and win contracts from church and civic patrons, yet his livelihood remained dependent on those institutions; his household also participated directly in colonial slavery.

Only part of Mesquita's music is still known. Over nearly thirty years as a composer and music director, he must have written or supplied far more than the works preserved in archives. Francisco Curt Lange estimated that his output may once have reached about 500 compositions, though this was a broad estimate, not a count based on surviving titles. The most complete thematic catalogue was prepared by Maria Inês Junqueira Guimarães in 1996. It contains 67 entries. She accepted 48 works as Mesquita's and placed another 19 in a doubtful group. The accepted works are numbered CT-MIG 01 to CT-MIG 48, while the doubtful group runs from CT-MIG D49 to CT-MIG D67. Letters after a number distinguish different versions or groups of manuscripts belonging to the same work. The condition of a manuscript and the question of who wrote the music are separate matters. An accepted work may be missing one or more vocal or instrumental parts. A complete copy may still leave the composer's identity uncertain, especially when it was made decades after Mesquita's death. Signatures, title pages, handwriting, ownership history and comparison with manuscripts in his hand all help establish whether a work is his. His dated music stretches from 1778 to about 1803. The earliest is the Missa para Quarta-Feira de Cinzas of 1778. It was followed by the Regina caeli in 1779, the Palm Sunday music of 1782, the Tercio of 1783, the Salve Regina of 1787 and the Office and Mass for the Dead of 1798. The Easter responsory Cum transisset Sabbatum, written around 1803, is the latest work that can be placed in his career with confidence. The number of manuscripts written in Mesquita's own hand depends on how they are counted. Guimarães found autograph material in eight works in 1996. Robson Bessa Costa counted twelve autograph manuscripts in 2006. A handwriting study by Silas de Lelis Silva Freitas in 2022 confirmed three complete sets written by Mesquita: the Regina caeli of 1779 and the Tercio of 1783 at the Museu da Música de Mariana, and the Salve Regina of 1787 at the Museu da Inconfidência. Other works preserve only a few parts in his hand, combine his writing with that of copyists, or are known through later copies. All of Mesquita's accepted music is sacred vocal music, usually written with instrumental accompaniment. The instruments often do more than support or double the singers, carrying melodies, answering vocal phrases and giving shape to the movement. No independent work for solo organ has been confirmed, despite his long career as an organist. Music sometimes listed under organ works, including parts of the Tercio, belongs to vocal settings with continuo.

Mesquita composed for the Mass, the Divine Office, processions and devotional services organized by churches, brotherhoods and third orders. These works were practical parts of worship rather than concert repertory in the modern sense. A manuscript might supply a complete service, a group of Proper chants for one feast, or a single item intended to alternate with plainchant and spoken prayer. His Mass settings range from the restrained scoring of the Ash Wednesday Mass to the more concerted E-flat major Mass. Office music includes Matins lessons and responsories, Vespers psalms and antiphons, and music for Compline or other hours. In both genres, only selected portions of the rite might be composed polyphonically; the remaining texts could be sung to chant. The resulting sequence alternated plainchant, accompanied solo passages and ensemble writing rather than forming an uninterrupted composition. Holy Week occupies a broad place in the known repertory. The Palm Sunday complex of 1782 contains music for the blessing and distribution of palms, the procession, Mass and Passion narrative. The Ash Wednesday Mass and Office stand at the beginning of Lent, while the Holy Saturday tracts, Mass and Vespers belong to the Easter Vigil. Cum transisset Sabbatum was intended for Easter Matins. Such collections joined music to ceremonial movement: a choir might sing inside the church, accompany a procession, pause for a liturgical action and resume at another station. Marian devotion is represented by settings of the Salve Regina, Regina caeli, Marian litanies and novena music. Antiphons such as the Salve Regina and Regina caeli changed with the liturgical season, while a litany arranged repeated invocations in a form suited to processions or collective prayer. Novenas provided music for devotional observances conducted over nine days. Mesquita also wrote for feasts of saints, including music associated with Saint Anthony, whose cult had a strong institutional presence in Tejuco. Music for the Blessed Sacrament included Eucharistic hymns, motets and pieces connected with exposition, processions and benediction. Settings of the Te Deum belonged to thanksgiving rather than the ordinary cycle of the Mass and could mark religious feasts, civic celebrations or commemorative occasions. Psalms and canticles served Vespers and other Office hours; responsories answered lessons at Matins; and shorter antiphons or motets framed particular ceremonial moments. These categories often overlap because one work could belong simultaneously to a liturgical text, a devotional practice and a brotherhood's annual celebration. The funeral repertory comprises Offices and Masses for the Dead, individual lessons and responsories, and music for the commendation or burial. The work known as the Ofício das Violetas (CT-MIG 38) uses violas in place of violins. The word violetas followed older Portuguese usage. Copies made during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries point to a long performance history in Minas Gerais and São Paulo. Its Office lessons and Requiem movements were interspersed with chant rather than performed as a self-contained concert sequence. The Tercio occupies a different devotional setting. Its four sections, Diffusa est gratia, Padre Nosso, Ave Maria and Gloria Patri, combine Latin with Portuguese prayer. The opening section uses concerted voices and instruments, while the more direct settings of the familiar prayers may have aided participation or clear collective recitation.

Mesquita moves easily between solo voices, duets and the full ensemble, sometimes within a single short movement. The choir usually sings the words together in clear, syllabic phrases, though brief imitation and longer melismas add emphasis. The instruments take an active part. They may support the singers, introduce a melody before the voice enters, answer a phrase or continue the motion during a pause. In the Quoniam of the E-flat major Mass, the first violin follows and anticipates the soprano while the second violin fills out the harmony. Runs on Jesu and a rising phrase on Altissimus draw attention to the text without giving the movement the character of an operatic aria. Plainchant remains woven into the music. It can open a movement, alternate with the composed passages or reappear inside a vocal melody. In the Palm Sunday setting, the Asperges me and Credo begin with unaccompanied chant before the voices and instruments enter. Some sections of the Credo last only ten or fifteen measures. Their brevity allows the music to follow changes in speaker, text and ceremonial action with little delay. Mesquita often matches a word or phrase with a small musical gesture. In Exaudi nos, Domine from the Ash Wednesday music, the opening plea passes from the tenor to the other voices and grows in intensity. In Immutemur habitu, a chromatic bass descends beneath the words in cinere et cilicio, "in ashes and sackcloth". The B-flat major Litany pauses in the middle of Christe, audi nos, then moves into a darker harmony. In Cum appropinquaret, a silence separates the Palm Sunday narrative from the command addressed to the people of Jerusalem. The harmony usually moves through clear tonic and dominant areas, with chromatic bass lines, suspensions and sharper changes reserved for moments of prayer or emotional weight. Mesquita does not force every phrase into a regular four- or eight-measure pattern. In the Salve Regina, the length of each phrase follows the Latin text. The voices may stop after six, seven, ten or eleven measures, and the instruments sometimes finish the thought on their own. Cadences give these unequal phrases a natural sense of arrival. His Masses share traits with the Italian church music heard at the Portuguese court, especially the Neapolitan repertory of composers such as David Perez and Niccolò Jommelli. Long texts are divided into short movements, with solos and duets alternating with the choir. Melodies often unfold in balanced phrases, while the orchestra introduces ideas or answers the singers. Mesquita shaped these methods for the smaller ensembles and ceremonial needs of colonial Minas Gerais. His music does not fit comfortably under a single period label. Continuo writing, rhetorical treatment of the text and sudden contrasts recall Baroque practice. Clear melodies, chordal choral writing and regular tonal cadences belong to the galant and Classical worlds. These elements often occur together in the same composition.

• Missa para Quarta-Feira de Cinzas The 1778 Ash Wednesday Mass (CT-MIG 16) is Mesquita's earliest securely dated composition. Its four-part voices, obbligato cello and continuo produce an austere sonority suited to the beginning of Lent. The cello functions both as bass and as an independent melodic participant. In Exaudi nos, Domine and Immutemur habitu, repeated invocations, dynamic contrast, suspensions and a chromatically descending bass connect musical gesture with penitential language. Later copies added orchestral parts, but these do not belong to the original scoring. • Dominica in Palmis The Palm Sunday collection of 1782 (CT-MIG 03a) is one of the most extensive autograph groups connected with Mesquita. It follows the blessing of palms, procession, Mass and Passion, using four vocal parts, two violins, two horns and cello or continuo. Plainchant incipits and alternation remain integral to the service. Short movements, predominantly homophonic declamation and sudden shifts between narration and direct speech allow the music to follow the changing ritual. Later copies add viola, flutes and clarinets; Guimarães's reconstruction excludes these parts from the 1782 version. • Tercio The autograph full score of the 1783 Tercio, held at the Museu da Música de Mariana, is valuable both for its handwriting and for its devotional form. The opening Diffusa est gratia is written for soprano, alto and bass with two violins, viola and continuo. It alternates individual voices with homophonic ensemble passages. The following Padre Nosso, Ave Maria and Gloria Patri move from Latin into Portuguese and back again, joining concerted church music to prayers familiar from communal devotion. • Salve Regina The Salve Regina of 1787 (CT-MIG 40) remains in an autograph source at the Museu da Inconfidência. It is scored for four voices, two violins and continuo and unfolds in three sections: a slow opening, a quicker central passage and a short return to the opening tempo. Solos, duets and chorus alternate within 114 measures. Melodic ascent, descent, rests and melismas follow images of queenship, pleading, tears and exile, while unequal phrase lengths give the Latin syntax priority over regular periodic design. Carlos Alberto Figueiredo's critical study compares three editions, two analyses and nine recordings, illustrating how later editors and performers have shaped the work's modern reception. • Te Deum in A minor The A-minor Te Deum (CT-MIOP 134) is one of three settings of the hymn associated with Mesquita. Its fourteen movements alternate composed music with plainchant and call for four vocal parts, two violins, viola, two horns and continuo. Eight source sets are held by the Museu da Inconfidência, but only the alto, tenor and two violin parts are autograph; the remaining voices and instruments depend partly on eighteenth- and nineteenth-century copies. Recurrent violin motives bind the short movements together, while changes among solos, duets and full ensemble clarify the long hymn. The source history has made the work a case study in critical editing: modern performances must distinguish Mesquita's notation from later added instruments, dynamics and articulation.

Curt Lange encountered his first eighteenth-century Minas Gerais manuscripts in 1944 and worked in the region between 1944 and 1946. His article "La música en Minas Gerais: un informe preliminar", published in the sixth volume of the Boletín Latino-Americano de Música in 1946, brought Mesquita and other Minas Gerais composers before a readership outside the towns where their music had been copied and performed. In 1951 the Universidad Nacional de Cuyo in Mendoza issued the first volume of Lange's Archivo de Música Religiosa de la "Capitania Geral das Minas Gerais". It printed three eighteenth-century compositions: Mesquita's Salve Regina, Marcos Coelho Neto's Maria Mater gratiae and Francisco Gomes da Rocha's Novena de Nossa Senhora do Pilar. Lange called the work one of discovery and restoration. His transcriptions made the repertory performable, but he did not always separate the composer's notation from corrected notes, dynamics, articulation and other editorial additions. Cataloguing proceeded by archive before it reached the composer-wide level. O Ciclo do Ouro, published in 1978, catalogued and microfilmed a selection from Minas Gerais holdings. Duprat and Baltazar's 1991 volume arranged the Minas Gerais composers in the Coleção Francisco Curt Lange. Guimarães's 1996 thematic catalogue drew the scattered witnesses together around Mesquita's works. Its 67 entries contain musical incipits, liturgical purpose, title-page transcriptions, vocal and instrumental parts, source locations, dates, copyists and bibliography. Forty-eight entries were accepted under the numbers CT-MIG 01–48; nineteen uncertain entries were separated as CT-MIG D49–67. Version letters distinguish settings or source groups that share a title. For the bicentenary of Mesquita's death, André Guerra Cotta edited Lobo de Mesquita no Museu da Música de Mariana in 2005 for the Fundação Cultural e Educacional da Arquidiocese de Mariana. The volume contains editions of five works drawn from the museum's manuscripts, with source discussions, editorial commentary and facsimiles of the Regina caeli and Tercio. The facsimiles made Mesquita's handwriting, corrections, articulation and figured bass available for direct comparison with the transcriptions. The volume did not issue a separate set of performing parts. Where a source was incomplete, the edition named the reconstructed material; the missing horn parts of Ave Regina caelorum, for example, were supplied editorially. A further institutional edition followed in 2008 as the first volume of the state-sponsored Patrimônio Arquivístico-Musical Mineiro. Coordinated by Paulo Castagna, the 401-page volume printed nine works, with Portuguese and English introductory texts, liturgical and archival commentary, scores and digital performance material. Its sources came from more than one archive, permitting comparison among copies instead of making one institution's holdings stand for the whole work. Critical editions of individual compositions have since returned to the autograph material, among them Carlos Alberto Figueiredo's edition of the Salve Regina and Sérgio Pires's edition of the A-minor Te Deum. The A-minor Te Deum gives a particularly clear example of how the chosen sources alter the performing score. The Museu da Inconfidência has eight source groups. Only the alto, tenor and two violin parts are in Mesquita's hand. Eighteenth-century horn parts, nineteenth-century viola and bass parts, the complete set copied by João Nepomuceno Ribeiro Urcini in 1878, a horn part copied in 1907 and a small tenor fragment complete the group. Urcini added trumpet and saxhorn parts that do not belong to the eighteenth-century scoring. Lange based his transcription solely on Urcini's complete 1878 copy. He corrected pitches and supplied dynamics, articulation and bowing without consistently marking them as editorial. Recordings and a 2006 performing edition drew heavily on that text. The autograph violins, examined in Pires's edition, carry far more articulation than Urcini's copies and differ at passages where the strings give the music its continuity. Pires used the four autograph parts as the primary text and drew missing material from four secondary source groups. The eighteenth-century horn parts were preferred to Urcini's altered scoring; nineteenth-century trumpet and saxhorn parts were excluded. Additions derived by analogy were marked with brackets, broken slurs or smaller type, and the critical commentary named the source behind each reconstructed passage. The result changes articulation, horn writing, dynamics and the distinction between original and editorial directions. What reaches a performer as "the score" is, in this case, a reasoned reconstruction from papers written across more than a century.

Although Mesquita worked for many years as an organist, no securely identified independent keyboard or purely instrumental composition by him is known to survive. The catalogue consists essentially of sacred vocal works, frequently with instrumental accompaniment. Titles sometimes classified as organ music in older lists belong instead to vocal liturgical compositions. Diffusa est gratia is the opening portion of Tercio (CT-MIG 14), while Domine tu mihi lavas pedes is a doubtful Maundy Thursday antiphon (CT-MIG D51).

Mesquita's death did not end the working life of his music. A funeral office was performed in Caeté on 25 January 1827 during memorial rites for Empress Maria Leopoldina. The ceremony took place more than twenty years after his death and outside the towns where he had held his last appointments. New performing parts were copied for church use through the nineteenth century and into the early twentieth. Manuscript sets of the Ofício das Violetas circulated in Minas Gerais and São Paulo. Its nickname came from the violas, called violetas in older Portuguese usage, that take the place of violins in the instrumental group. Copies made by different musicians contain changes in notation and scoring suited to the ensembles that used them. The archive of the Orquestra Lira Sanjoanense in São João del-Rei holds an 1835 copy of Dominica in Palmis, another 1835 copy of the Matins for Holy Saturday, Holy Week offices, copies of Christus factus est, the funeral Matins called Ofício das Violetas, two settings of Memento mei Deus, and a Te Deum. Some of these papers were prepared by musicians such as Francisco de Paula de Miranda and Hermenegildo José de Souza Trindade, whose copying joined Mesquita's eighteenth-century repertory to nineteenth-century church services. The Lira Sanjoanense and the Orquestra Ribeiro Bastos supplied music for different brotherhood calendars in São João del-Rei. Mesquita's works were still heard in services sung by the Lira in the early twenty-first century. His manuscripts were working materials in the hands of musicians before they became objects of cataloguing, editing, and archival study.

Francisco Curt Lange began examining music archives in Minas Gerais in 1944. His 1946 article, "La música en Minas Gerais: un informe preliminar", introduced Mesquita and other composers from the region to readers far beyond the towns where their manuscripts were kept. The first volume of Lange's Archivo de Música Religiosa de la "Capitania Geral das Minas Gerais" followed in 1951 and printed Mesquita's Salve Regina beside works by Marcos Coelho Neto and Francisco Gomes da Rocha. Lange collected manuscripts, prepared transcriptions, contacted performers, and promoted the repertory in Brazil and abroad. Concerts in Brazil, Argentina, and Germany followed during the 1950s. In 1958, the Orquestra Sinfônica Brasileira and the Associação de Canto Coral recorded the Salve Regina and the E-flat major Mass. The first concert and recorded performances generally used the large choirs and orchestras then customary for eighteenth-century sacred music. His editions made the music readily performable, but they did not always separate manuscript notation from editorial intervention. Lange's transcription of the A-minor Te Deum relied on the complete set copied by João Nepomuceno Ribeiro Urcini in 1878, although autograph parts and other manuscript groups were available. Lange changed notes and supplied dynamics, articulation, and bowing without consistently marking those additions. Urcini's trumpet and saxhorn parts, written long after Mesquita's death, also entered Lange's performing text. The 1978 recording by the Orquestra de Câmara do Brasil and Ars Barroca, conducted by José Siqueira, used Lange's transcription. A recording by the Camerata de Caracas under Isabel Palacios followed the same text. Performers therefore encountered the work through a score that combined Mesquita's music with nineteenth-century additions and twentieth-century editorial decisions. The word "rediscovery" fits the new concert, publishing, and recording audience, but it does not fit the whole chronology. Mesquita's music was already being copied and performed in Minas Gerais. Lange changed its reach and its standing in Brazilian music scholarship, but he did not recover a repertory that had disappeared altogether. The first generation of Brazilian historical musicology often arranged the colonial past around a small canon of named composers and selected works. Archives, copyists, employers, anonymous performers, ceremonies, and Afro-Brazilian music received less attention. Paulo Castagna has examined the limits of this composer-centred model, including its emphasis on discovery, biography, stylistic classification, and the search for masterworks. Work on Serro and Diamantina has also questioned the racial theory of mulatismo musical that guided part of Lange's interpretation. His narrative elevated a group of named composers while giving less space to communal, anonymous, and Afro-Brazilian forms of music-making. New readings of the same archival material have placed contracts, ceremonies, institutions, copyists, and working musicians beside the composers whose names became familiar through Lange's publications.

Most of Mesquita's music comes down in sets of separate vocal and instrumental parts made for performance. A manuscript in his own hand carries particular authority, but an autograph may still lack a voice or instrument, contain corrections, or leave details unstated. A later copy may preserve a missing part while introducing new errors or adapting the music to the performers available. Some source sets combine Mesquita's handwriting with that of eighteenth- and nineteenth-century copyists. The full autograph score of the Tercio is unusual; partbooks were the more usual working format. The Museu da Música de Mariana holds some of the earliest sources. Its Coleção Dom Oscar de Oliveira contains the autograph Regina caeli laetare of 1779, catalogued as CDO.01.272, and the autograph score of the Tercio of 1783, CDO.01.098. The former is a ten-part set comprising four voices, two violins, obbligato viola, figured cello and two horns. The latter occupies fifteen folios and sets its four devotional sections in score. Graphoscopic comparison has confirmed Mesquita's hand in these sources. The museum also holds copies of his litanies, Marian antiphons, funeral music and Holy Week repertory, some written decades after his death. These copies came from cathedral, parish and musicians' archives gathered in Mariana and nearby towns. The Museu da Inconfidência in Ouro Preto keeps the Coleção Francisco Curt Lange at its Casa do Pilar archive. Among its Mesquita material are the autograph Salve Regina of 1787, autograph parts from the Palm Sunday music of 1782, autograph portions of the A-minor Te Deum, and copies made between the eighteenth and twentieth centuries. The museum's musicological database covers about 1,300 works by Brazilian and European composers, of which Mesquita's manuscripts form one part. Régis Duprat and Carlos Alberto Baltazar's 1991 catalogue assigned the A-minor Te Deum the number 134, although its three Te Deum entries contain exchanged incipits that have required correction. The similarly named Acervo Curt Lange at the Federal University of Minas Gerais is a different institution. It holds Lange's personal archive: correspondence, research notes, photographs, working transcriptions, editions, sound media and copies of musical sources. The original musical-manuscript group that once formed part of his personal archive is the collection kept by the Museu da Inconfidência. The archive of the Orquestra Lira Sanjoanense in São João del-Rei preserves another branch of the music's transmission. Its Mesquita holdings include a copy of the Dominica in Palmis made by Francisco de Paula de Miranda in 1835, Holy Week offices copied by Hermenegildo José de Souza Trindade, Matins for Holy Saturday, the gradual Christus factus est, the Ofício das Violetas, and an A-minor litany copied by José Joaquim de Sant'Ana in 1807. The 1807 litany has voices, violins and instrumental bass; a source in the Curt Lange collection adds viola and horns. Such differences may result from adaptation to another ensemble, not from a second version authorized by Mesquita. The Palm Sunday autograph at the Museu da Inconfidência also passed through the São João del-Rei network. An ownership note states that it belonged to "Paula", probably Francisco de Paula de Miranda, after purchase from the estate of João José das Chagas. Miranda's 1835 copy remained in the Lira Sanjoanense archive. Copyists in that circle kept Mesquita's Holy Week and funeral music in use, while occasionally changing its instrumentation or combining parts from different sources. Further copies are held by the Orquestra Ribeiro Bastos in São João del-Rei, the Lira Ceciliana in Prados, the Museu Carlos Gomes in Campinas, and church archives in Minas Gerais. Guimarães also consulted private holdings and manuscripts in São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro. No single archive contains a complete corpus. A composition may have its oldest part in Ouro Preto, its most complete nineteenth-century copy in São João del-Rei and another version in Mariana. Copyists often omitted a composer's name, shortened a liturgical title or filed a piece under the feast on which it was used. A work could consequently acquire different titles in different towns. Missing covers and parts make the problem harder. Handwriting, paper, watermarks, ownership notes, musical incipits and the order of liturgical texts are used together when deciding whether two manuscripts transmit the same work and whether Mesquita wrote it. Freitas's 2022 handwriting study confirmed three wholly autograph source groups while leaving other traditional ascriptions open to further comparison.
