Lane was born Abigail Francine Lassman in Brooklyn, New York City, to Jewish parents, Abraham "Abbey" Lassman and Grace Lassman. Sources differ over her year of birth: the Internet Broadway Database and The Hollywood Reporter give December 14, 1932, while an obituary in The New York Times gives December 14, 1931. She had a brother, Leonard. She was raised in Manhattan, where she attended the High School of Music & Art for a period before pursuing a career in entertainment. Lane entered show business as a child. According to biographical accounts, she began performing on radio at about four years of age and appeared on screen as a child in the Vitaphone musical short Toyland Casino (1938), in which she was billed under her birth name, Francine Lassman. The film was a Warner Bros. Vitaphone production featuring a revue of child performers singing and dancing; contemporary and later film records identify Lane among its performers. Her early work placed her within a generation of young performers whose careers could develop across radio, short films, vaudeville-style stage presentations, and, increasingly, television. By her teenage years, Lane had moved into live musical performance. She adopted the professional name Abbe Marshall, apparently using a version of her father's given name, "Abbey", as the basis for the new surname or stage identity; contemporary accounts confirm that she performed under the name during the early part of her Broadway career. In 1947, she appeared on Broadway in George Abbott's musical Barefoot Boy with Cheek, credited as Abbe Marshall. The following year she joined the original Broadway production of As the Girls Go, also under that name. The Broadway records list her as a performer in the original casts of both productions, establishing her professional stage career while she was still in her teens. Lane's early career was consequently shaped by several forms of popular entertainment rather than by a single discipline. She worked as a singer, dancer, and actress while still young, gaining experience in radio, filmed musical shorts, and Broadway productions. By the late 1940s, she had also begun appearing in television entertainment. In 1949 she became associated with bandleader Vincent Lopez, appearing as a vocalist on his television program. Her work with Lopez provided a transition from the stage to the expanding medium of television and preceded the association with Xavier Cugat that would become a major turning point in her career. Lane returned to Broadway in 1958, by then using the name Abbe Lane professionally, as "Bobo" in the musical Oh, Captain!, starring Tony Randall. Although this later appearance falls outside her childhood and adolescence, it marked the continuation of a stage career that had begun with her teenage Broadway appearances a decade earlier.

Although she later became particularly associated with nightclub singing and with the Latin-influenced music of her then-husband, bandleader Xavier Cugat, she established herself as an actress before achieving her greatest visibility as a singer. Her film career began in the early 1950s. She appeared in the American Westerns Wings of the Hawk (1953), directed by Budd Boetticher, and Ride Clear of Diablo (1954), followed by appearances in such films as The Americano (1955) and Chicago Syndicate (1955). During the same period, she began working extensively in Italy. Her international career included appearances in Italian productions such as Lo scapolo (1955), Donatella (1956), Tempo di villeggiatura (1956), Parola di ladro (1957), Maracaibo (1958), and Totò, Eva e il pennello proibito (1959). Her Italian film work helped establish her reputation there independently of her later American television appearances. Lane also became an early American television personality in Italy. In 1955–56 she co-hosted Casa Cugat with Cugat and Paul Steffen on Italy's RAI television service. The program was broadcast on the National network in four installments between December 18, 1955, and January 8, 1956. She subsequently appeared on other Italian programs, including Controcanale and Il Giocondo, and became a familiar figure to Italian television audiences during the 1950s and 1960s. Contemporary accounts emphasized the contrast between her glamorous stage image and the more conservative standards applied to female performers on television at the time. Lane later recalled that she was regarded as "too sexy" in Italy, while American television censors similarly objected to the costume she had planned to wear on The Jackie Gleason Show. In 1952, Lane married Cugat, who was more than 30 years her senior. His orchestra and his prominence as a bandleader had a substantial influence on the direction of her subsequent career. She increasingly performed as a nightclub singer, combining traditional American popular songs with Latin repertoire, including rumba and cha-cha-cha material. The partnership also made Lane a regular performer alongside Cugat in television variety programs and live appearances. A 1963 profile in Adam magazine described her in deliberately provocative terms as "the swingingest sexpot in show business", language that reflected the publicity surrounding her image at the time rather than a neutral description of her musical abilities. Lane's recording career developed alongside her nightclub work. She recorded for RCA Victor during the late 1950s, beginning with Be Mine Tonight, made with Tito Puente and his orchestra. The album, released in 1958, combined Latin-oriented arrangements with English-language popular standards and songs associated with Latin American and European repertoire. Its selections included "Whatever Lola Wants", "Arrivederci Roma", "Green Eyes", and "Babalu". She subsequently recorded The Lady in Red with arranger Sid Ramin and Where There's a Man, her final RCA album. She moved to Mercury Records in 1961, recording Abbe Lane with Xavier Cugat and His Orchestra, followed by The Many Sides of Abbe Lane in 1964. Lane returned to Broadway in 1958 in the musical Oh, Captain!, opposite Tony Randall, playing Bobo. The production opened at the Alvin Theatre on February 4, 1958, and ran for 192 performances. She was unable to appear on the original cast recording because her existing recording contract prevented her from making the album. Eileen Rodgers instead recorded Lane's numbers for the cast LP, while Lane subsequently recorded two of the songs herself on one of her solo albums. Television became one of Lane's most consistent professional outlets. She appeared repeatedly on The Ed Sullivan Show, as well as on programs hosted by Steve Allen, Jack Paar, Red Skelton, Jack Benny, Dean Martin, Mike Douglas, Merv Griffin, and Johnny Carson. Her appearances generally drew on the combination of singing, dancing, comedy, and glamour that characterized American variety television of the period. The Ed Sullivan show's archival biography notes that she made numerous appearances on the program and became particularly associated with Latin-style music and an energetic stage presence. Her acting work continued as well, although increasingly in guest and supporting roles. On American television she appeared in episodes of Naked City (1961), Burke's Law (1965), The Man from U.N.C.L.E. (1966), F Troop (1966), The Flying Nun (1968), The Brady Bunch (1970), Love, American Style (1973), Vega$ (1979), and Hart to Hart (1983). Her television roles ranged from dramatic and crime-series parts to comic appearances, reflecting the increasingly varied nature of her work after her peak years as a nightclub performer. Lane continued to make films in Europe during the 1960s, including Julius Caesar Against the Pirates (1962) and the German-Italian production The Lightship (1963). Although accounts sometimes characterize her European career as comprising 21 films, filmographies vary in how they count co-productions, cameo appearances, and films in which she appeared as herself. A more cautious description is therefore that she made a substantial number of American and European film appearances between the early 1950s and the early 1960s. Lane and Cugat divorced in 1964. By then, her career had encompassed Broadway, American and European cinema, nightclub performance, commercial recordings, and both American and Italian television. Although she remained active on television and occasionally returned to recording and stage work, her screen appearances became less frequent during the following decades. Her final theatrical film appearance came in Steven Spielberg, John Landis, Joe Dante, and George Miller's Twilight Zone: The Movie (1983). Lane appeared as the senior flight attendant in the segment "Nightmare at 20,000 Feet", starring John Lithgow. She subsequently made a small number of television appearances, including an episode of Amazing Stories in 1985. Her career is therefore notable not only for the sultry public image with which she was often marketed, but also for the breadth of media in which she worked and for her role in bringing Latin-influenced popular music to American nightclub and television audiences during the 1950s and 1960s.

In 1992, Lane wrote the semi-autobiographical novel But Where Is Love? which described the painful memories of a teenage girl married to an older man. Lane received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame at 6381 Hollywood Boulevard for her contribution to television.

In 1952, at age 19, Lane married bandleader Xavier Cugat — who was more than 30 years her senior — as his third wife. In 1964, Lane and Cugat divorced. They had no children together during their marriage. In December 1964, she married theatrical agent Perry Leff, remaining married until Leff's death in 2020, at age 93. Lane and Leff had two sons, Steven and Andrew. Lane died in Los Angeles on April 25, 2026, at the age of 94.
