Leben und historische Einordnung
Er wurde von Karl Bartsch in die Reihe der Schweizer Minnesänger gestellt.
Die historische Person des Dichters Göli, auch Goeli oder Goli(n) bzw. Gonin genannt, ist unklar, und die Zuordnung wird kontrovers diskutiert. Die neuere Forschung vermutet einen Diethelmus Goli(n), bezeugt zwischen 1254 und 1276, aus einer in Basel ansässigen und ursprünglich aus Baden im Aargau, möglicherweise auch aus Badenweiler im Schwarzwald, stammenden Familie. Dieser Interpretation wird ein Goeli entgegengesetzt, der zwischen 1273 und 1289 als Vogt des Grafen Egono III. von Freiburg im Breisgau urkundete. Die Datenlage ist alles andere als klar, und so kommt Max Schiendorfer zum Schluss, dass eine zuverlässige Bestimmung der historischen Person Goeli hoffnungslos sei. Trotzdem ist unbestritten, dass der Dichter in oder in der Nähe von Basel gelebt und gewirkt haben muss.
Dichtung und Werk
Im Codex Manesse sind 4 Minnelieder von Goeli überliefert. Parallelüberlieferungen finden sich unter anderen Namen in der Weingartner Liederhandschrift und anderen Handschriften und Fragmenten. Göli wird als Nachahmer Neidharts beschrieben, da seine Texte in verschiedenen Dokumenten mit der Überschrift Neidhart versehen sind.
